Graffiti on Public Transport: A Multi-Million-Dollar Challenge Worldwide
For many passengers, graffiti is simply part of the urban landscape. For public transport operators around the world, however, it represents a significant source of cost, maintenance effort, and operational disruption.
According to international industry organizations such as the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), a large proportion of public transport operators are regularly affected by graffiti. Nearly half of all public transport companies report graffiti-related incidents more than once a month. The consequences extend far beyond the cost of cleaning and repair, impacting vehicle availability, corporate image, and overall passenger satisfaction.
In the rail sector, exterior passenger interface components, particularly passenger door open push buttons are among the most heavily affected. These devices are frequently exposed to graffiti and must be cleaned repeatedly, often using aggressive chemical cleaning agents. At this critical intersection of vandalism, cleaning, and product durability, the long-term reliability of a component is determined. A button that withstands years of service without degradation remains an asset; one that does not quickly become a warranty and maintenance issue.
From Optional Feature to Standard Specification
To provide long-term protection against these demanding conditions, the MAFELEC TEAM has relied for many years on a dedicated anti-graffiti coating for the push button touch surface.
What was once an optional feature has now become standard:
All push buttons in the PK2x, PK5x, and CK series are supplied with a factory-applied anti-graffiti coating as standard.
The coating delivers two key benefits:
- Reduced graffiti adhesion: Spray paints and other contaminants are significantly easier to remove.
- Enhanced surface protection: The push button touch surface offers increased resistance to commonly used graffiti removers, helping preserve both the material and its appearance even after repeated cleaning cycles.
For new vehicle programs, this means anti-graffiti protection is an integral part of the push button design, eliminating the need to specify additional options or include separate protection packages.
Proven Performance Under Real-World Test Conditions
To ensure the coating performs not only in theory but also in daily operation, the push buttons undergo comprehensive in-house laboratory testing based on recognized requirements from the railway industry. Test samples are coated with commercially available spray paints and allowed to cure under defined conditions. They are then cleaned using standard graffiti removers. The cleaning chemicals are applied in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, the specified exposure times are observed, and the surfaces are subsequently cleaned with water and soft brushes.
The results are clear:
Push buttons equipped with the anti-graffiti coating show no cracking, discoloration, or surface damage after repeated cleaning cycles. Graffiti residues can be completely removed, while the push button touch surface retains both its functionality and its original appearance.
