Handrail Light for Rail Vehicles

Advanced LED lighting solutions from TSL-ESCHA

Leveraging their expertise in LED technology, TSL-ESCHA has introduced two versions of handrail lighting specifically designed for rail vehicles: the HL22 and HL18. The HL22 is another joint project between TSL-ESCHA and MAFELEC.

These lighting solutions blend seamlessly into the vehicle’s design, providing a modern appearance and enhancing the interior ambiance. Positioned strategically in the door areas, the handrail lights function as orientation aids for passengers, improving transfer efficiency and ensuring safe and comfortable boarding and alighting. This reduces wait and dwell times at stops. It is also possible to use colored light (red and green) to clearly signal the opening and closing of doors in order to further optimize the organization of transport operations.

Handrail Light as an All-in-One Solution, HL22

As an all-in-one solution, a light strip is installed directly into the handrail and is thus supplied as a complete assembly. The light emits through a pre-installed diffuser profile, creating a homogeneous indirect light pattern. A custom profile ensures the strength of the handrail. As a key safety element in the vehicle, the handrail must be particularly strong to withstand the increased loads in traffic while providing a secure grip for passengers.

Handrail Light as a Retrofit Option, HL18

In addition, TSL-ESCHA offers the HL18 handrail light, a retrofit option that allows the handrails of existing rail vehicles to be retrofitted with the innovative lighting. Suitable for a standard tube with a 35mm diameter, the HL18 requires a longitudinal milling as a mounting cutout for easy mechanical integration. This retrofit option allows existing vehicles to benefit from the advantages of the handrail light, with the flexibility to customize the length of lighting through stringing together individual light modules.

The flush and sealed mounting of HL18 ensures IP54 protection, safeguarding the light against dust and splash water.

Both lighting solutions are energy efficient and durable thanks to cutting-edge LED technology. With a range of color options (red, yellow, green) and white light (3000K-5000K) available, passengers can enjoy a personalized ambiance while maintaining the handrail’s uniform and pleasant feel.

Highlights of the HL22 and HL18

  • Recessed grips are optimally illuminated for safe and comfortable boarding and alighting
  • Aesthetic and functional, perfect integration into the interior of the rail vehicle
  • Creating a pleasant ambience in the interior
  • Good feel thanks to a smooth and even surface
  • Orientation aid for all passengers
  • Can also be used as a signal light in red and green

CK Touchless

The first hybrid push button from TSL-ESCHA that features touchless and tactile activation

TSL-ESCHA looks back on 35 years of experience in the development and production of push buttons. The focus is on the continuous development of products in order to realize holistic solutions to meet individual customer requirements. With the integration of touchless technology, TSL-ESCHA is expending its successful Combikey (CK) push button series and offers a product variation which additionally enables touchless activation of the push button.

The CK Touchless was designed for applications in rail vehicles and buses and can also be easily integrated into existing vehicles thanks to its simple installation. It offers a wide range of customized applications and is particularly suitable for use in wet cells and other areas where hygiene and cleanliness cannot be guaranteed on a permanent basis. The use of touchless technology also improves passenger comfort and increases personal well-being when using public transportation.

The CK Touchless is the first hybrid push button from TSL-ESCHA to feature a two-in-one solution. It is particularly user-friendly because, depending on the situation, preference and need, on the one hand it can be activated touchlessly via the sensor and, on the other hand, the passenger still has the option of activating it via the tactile touch surface.

The configuration of the touchless function ensures optimum coverage of the interaction area. Due to the pointed cone shape of the activation area, no adjacent push buttons are triggered. In addition, the sensor detects wiping movements during cleaning processes, so the push button is only activated when the movement is intended. Due to this intuitive hand movement toward the tactile touch surface, the CK Touchless is easy to handle and can be actuated effortlessly.

Proven product features of the CK push button series

The CK Touchless continues to combine the proven product features of the CK push button family. The robust building technology with a powder-coated stainless steel front bezel meets the requirements for quality and durability to meet the challenges of daily use in public transport. The transparent touch surface cover on the pictogram provides additional protection against abrasion and vandalism. Furthermore, the push button is also easy to clean thanks to its low-profile design and the stainless steel cover.

With the CK push button series and its modular design, TSL-ESCHA offers a wide range of possible combinations of colors, pictograms, touch surfaces and tactile symbols that can be customized. The tactile symbols are raised and comply in shape and size with the normative and legal requirements according to EN 14752.

The barrier-free and user-oriented operation makes the push button an efficient and reliable all-rounder in public transport that meets hygiene and customer requirements. The passengers’ sense of safety and well-being is enhanced, while the passenger experience is improved.

The PK52 push button series impresses in the door area of buses and trains with its very good lateral recognition of the LED status display and its haptic button feedback. An optional acoustic orientation signal makes it easier for passengers to find the push button. On the PK52, the mounting screws are concealed by a bezel. Until now, TSL-ESCHA offered this bezel exclusively with powder-coated stainless steel. To meet the changing requirements, a bezel made of high-quality plastic material was designed. This means the operator can choose from a larger variety and, if desired, also replace the stainless steel bezel of the PK52 push button (from year of manufacture 2016) with one made of engineering plastic.

The new PK52 bezel is made of a modern material that convinces with its high level of precision and accuracy of fit. The front panel is easy to mount. To do this, it is placed parallel to the push button unit and lightly pressed on. For final fastening of the plastic bezel, it must first be pressed on in the lower area until an acoustic click is heard. Then the bezel must be pressed firmly in the upper area until a clear click is heard. The plastic front panel is not intended for multiple use but is a wear and spare part that can be easily replaced. Delivery times can be kept short due to high availability for spare parts.

The PK52 push button plastic bezel is currently available in eight common colors: traffic yellow (RAL 1023), traffic red (RAL 3020), traffic blue (RAL 5017), traffic green (RAL 6024), night blue (RAL 5022), light grey (RAL 7035), traffic white (RAL9016) and signal black (RAL 9004).

The high-quality plastic of the new front panel complies with the EN 45545-2 fire protection standard. Due to the material characteristics, the bezel is also more resistant to graffiti removers and also more robust against cleaning chemicals. The new plastic bezel has successfully passed shock and vibration tests.

Compared to the stainless steel front panel, the plastic bezel offers a weight saving of 24 grams.

With a top speed of 230 kilometers per hour, the Railjet connects the whole of Austria and also takes passengers directly to Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Switzerland. Passengers in the business class can now enjoy the new TSL BL18 reading light. The Viaggio Comfort, manufactured by Siemens, is used by ÖBB for long-distance services. There, it is known as the Railjet.

The 205-meter-long train is divided into different car classes. In the top category, Business Class, passengers can take advantage of a reading light in addition to more space and comfortable leather seats. The reading field can be adjusted easily by bending the swan neck into the desired position. The reading light from TSL-ESCHA is a retrofit solution.

The special feature of the new TSL reading light is that it consists of three individual parts. These are the flexible arm with lamp head, the on/off push button with functional LED and the housing with power supply unit.

The 27-centimeter-long flexible arm can be individually adjusted by the passenger. At its end is the lamp head, which with its integrated optical lens provides a pleasantly and comfortably illuminated reading field. The advanced high-power LEDs are an energy-efficient light source. To switch on the light, the passenger presses a push button installed in the housing. An integrated LED indicates the status of the reading light. The flex arm and push button are integrated into an EN 45545-2 compliant housing made of polycarbonate. The housing is mounted in the Railjet on an existing lamp holder at the side wall. Other housing designs are available on request.

In the case of a defect, the design in three replaceable units allows the individual parts to be replaced without exchanging the entire reading light. This significantly reduces maintenance costs for the customer.

To make maintenance and functionality easier, each reading light has a test connection. This can be activated via a central switch, for example, which then switches on all reading lights. Then they can then be switched off manually using the integrated push button. If a luminaire does not light up during the process or cannot be switched off, this indicates a defect. This means that errors can be located and rectified more quickly.
